Motorcyle PPE is currently covered by a number of standards. For motorcycle clothing (jackets, trousers, 1 piece suits) the standard EN17092 is used. For Gloves and boots the standards are EN13594 and EN13634. Motorcycle Crash helmets are compulsory on UK roads and are covered with ECE22.05 and ECE22.06.

The relevant standards are best explained using the below PPE Standards diagram that has been designed by the bsi.

The Below Hi-Viz Jackets are intended to be worn on top of exisiting safety motorcycle Jackets. As 'over jackets' they have no armour and are not CE tested. Over jackets are available to order from us at 5-ways Motorcycles but are not readily available from the store. Badges seen in photographs are not included. Most Emergency services supply their own appropriate velcro fit badges to the front and rear.

PPE Regulation 2016/425 (EN17092) - explained

PPE Regulation stands for European Personal Protective Equipment Regulation.  As of the 21st of April 2018 all normal motorcycle clothing will be categorised as Personal Protective Equipment and must be manufacturfed to meet one of the 3 standards (A, AA or AAA). AAA being the highest standard of protection.

The regulation requires any clothing or personal equipment manufactured to provide protection from injury and to comply to the relevant  European standard, which in this case is CE (Conformité Européenne). EN17092. The clothing or gear will need to have a CE label permanently attached to it with the number of the standard it was tested to.

There are already many motorcycle garment manufacturers which have clothing tested by CE, but before April 2018 it wasd not a requirement . Much of the clothing that is currently in use has body armour that is certified however not the whole garment. The PPE Regulation 2016/425 (EN17092 etc) means all areas of the clothing will need to be tested and certified to either A, AA or AAA level. For clothing covering the body (Jackets and trousers), this will be known as EN17092

EN 13595  - explained *Note this standard has now been superceeded by the above.

EN 13595-1 was the standard for Protective clothing for professional motorcycle riders prior to the EN17092 being agreed. Jackets, trousers and one piece or divided suits. had to meet an abrasion resistance of level 1 or 2, Impact cut resistance level 1 or 2 and Burst strength level 1 or 2 – Level 2 being more protective in all cases. The sheer weight and bulk of some of these suits unfortunately led to negative feedback from users and we now only provide clothing tested using the EN17092 standards above.

CE Certification standards other than garments, ie gloves and boots etc

The above covers off motorcycle clothing, but note that boots need to meet EN 13634:2017 standards, gloves EN 13594:2015, elbow, knee, hip and shoulder protectors to EN 1621-1:2012, back protectors to EN 1621-2:2014, and chest protectors EN 1621-3:2018. EN 1621-4:2013 covers lanyard-activated air bag protectors, while EN 14021:2013 is a specialized stone shield protector like those used in motocross.

The whole story on Motorcycle PPE standards

We think Revit Clothing company have the best explanation of these complex regulations and the changes that have been made. if you have a spare hour or so they have a great article here but please bear in mind that EN13595 has now been superceeded by the EN17092 standards.

Fiveways Motorcycle Centre Ltd is an Appointed Representative of Automotive Compliance Ltd, who is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA No 497010). Automotive Compliance Ltd’s permissions as a Principal Firm allows Fiveways Motorcycle Centre Ltd to act as a credit broker, not as a lender, for the introduction to a limited number of lenders and to act as an agent on behalf of the insurer for insurance distribution activities only.

We can introduce you to a selected panel of lenders, which includes manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent. An introduction to a lender does not amount to independent financial advice and we act as their agent for this introduction. Our approach is to introduce you first to the manufacturer lender linked directly to the particular franchise you are purchasing your vehicle from, who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, we then seek to introduce you to whichever of the other lenders on our panel is able to make the next best offer of finance for you. Our aim is to secure the best deal you are eligible for from our panel of lenders. Lenders may pay a fixed commission to us for introducing you to them, calculated by reference to the vehicle model or amount you borrow. Different lenders may pay different commissions for such introductions, and manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement, all of which are set by the lender concerned. If you ask us what the amount of commission is, we will tell you in good time before the Finance agreement is executed. All finance applications are subject to status, terms and conditions apply, UK residents only, 18’s or over. Guarantees may be required.
